Petition against mandatory Mode S equipment
As you will know, the whole future of free-flight is under jepordy with the recent proposals made by the CAA regarding the carrying of transponders. Despite the consultation with general aviation in the UK, it looks as though the CAA will be implementing their proposals some time in the future UNLESS we stop them.
Please help by signing the online petition against these proposals which will be sent to 10 Downing Street:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/transpondermodeS/
Its straightforward and only takes a minute.
February Club Night
Unfortunately Pete Cunningham is no longer able to make it on 1 Feb 07 so the First Aid Night/Incident Demonstration is off. Instead we plan to hold a quiz night. Details are still to be finalised but it will probably be teams of up to 4 with a choice of club sweatshirt or polo shirt for all members of the winning team; and a ‘mystery’ gift for the runners up. Usual timings: 8pm meet up; 8:15pm notices; 8:30pm quiz starts.
XC League 2007
The Dales XC league 2007 is now up and running. This year the league will be hosted by the BHPA paragliding competitions panel. If you are a hang glider or paraglider pilot and intend to fly XC this year then please register at www.pgcomps.org.uk
To register simply select “competitions” and then “registration” from the drop down menu and then click on UK XC League, fill out the form which appears.
Once registered you can log in and enter your flights into the Dales HG or Dales PG league. Registration is free for the Dales league, however if you wish to have your flights displayed in the national XC league then there is a £5.00 fee. You can opt for this at any time during the season. For entry into the club league the minimum open distance is 5km, all other rules are the same as for the national league. Flights for the club league must be made from a club site, which can include non-guidebook sites. You should be pilot rated if flying cross country; however club pilots can enter flights into the league, this is to allow mentored or BCC flights etc. to be included.
Please read the XC league rules at http://www.pgcomps.org.uk/xcleague/xc/rules.htm for more information on qualifying flight types and the scoring system.
The league opened on 1/11/2006 and will close on 31/10/07 if you have made any qualifying flights get them entered now!
Good luck and go far.

Flying in the Bcc
The Bcc is a Flying competetion designed for Pilots with a minimum rating of CP + 10 hours or more. It encourages safe competetion in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The Dales club intend on entering a paragliding team again this season , after last year when we accidently qualified for the final !
What are the advantages to joining the team ? Namely, developing your flying skills, improving upon or flying your first Xc, further coaching will be available to team members , flying a variety of new sites and having a good time .
What are the disadvantages then ? Well you will be able to visit D.I.Y. centres on a weekend less to buy decorating stuff , the second hand value of your wing will also be less as it will have more hours on it and you will be forced into pubs on occasions to ” have a good time “.
So if you fancy going flying, and you can afford to buy a round, you to can contact the Bcc team. contact Kev or Sean ( Dales competetion Secs ). sean@ogi.me.uk
Thinking of getting or refreshing your Pilot Qualification?
If anyone’s interested in studying for their pilot exam or just going on a refresher send an email to me at contacts@dhpc.org.uk. The club will be running some revision sessions over the winter which will go through what you need to pass the pilot exam.
All you need beforehand is to have passed or expect to pass all the pilot tasks in the pilot task book by the time the exam is held. We will also be able to book and invigilate the exam for anyone who wants to sit it.
The pilot qualification is for anyone who’s got a bit of experience after their CP and is to show that you’ve gained an awareness of flight, weather, airspace and navigation. If you’re thinking of going XC it’s a must.

‘07 Calendars & Dinner Dance Tickets
Folks, we have some DHPC 2007 calendars left and tickets for the February Dinner Dance. The calendar proceeds are going towards the Yorkshire Air Ambulance who’ve been on more than a few call outs for us in the past.
The Tempest Arms in Elslack will be hosting us for a third year for the Dinner Dance, its a gastro pub and most of the price of a ticket goes on the food. Its also the one chance of the year we get to meet and thank the farmers for allowing us to fly.
Both are available from Tony Pickering :

MALLERSTANG
Mallerstang & Wild Boar Fell are not DHPC sites. They are controlled by Sun Soar Paragliding. Please give them a call beforehand so that you can get an update on current rules/sensitivities. The best number to use is 0870 199 7343 which is normally diverted to Ian or someone else ‘in the know’. If you get the answer machine leave a message and they will try to get back to you.
Be aware that the northern end of the ridge (on the other side of the road from where you park the car for Tailbridge) has been sensitive in the past due to nesting birds. Please don’t be tempted to walk up from there.
